Cultural Quilt: Cuban Courtroom Attire

Host: David Andrews

Guest Speaker: Professor Lee Cabatingan, UC Irvine

On this episode, our host discusses the importance of courtroom attire in the Caribbean (Cuba specifically) and how it contrasts to the attire worn in US courtrooms. Our guest today is Lee Cabatingan, Assistant professor of Criminology, Law and Society and Anthropology at UC Irvine. Her work, “Fashioning the Legal Subject: Popular Justice and Courtroom Attire in the Caribbean” goes deeper than clothing though, reaching towards ideological perspectives and the attitudes that judges and people have about their legal cultures, and how clothing in the courtroom acts as an unlikely mirror into these cultural worlds.
